I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun. - Katniss Everdeen
This week, Rogue Magazine met and interviewed Jennifer Lawrence, where she talked about her success as playing Katniss Everdeen in the popular novel and film, The Hunger Games, and her underlying success in becoming a fashion icon for millions of young female adults across the world.
Katniss Everdeen is the main character of the novel. She is sixteen years of age and lives in District twelve, which is one of the poorest areas of the country. District twelve is part of a twelve district system located in a country called Panem. Panem is dubbed to be post-apacolyptic America.
Katniss's father was an important figure in her life and was the one responsible for teaching her how to use a bow and arrow. Together they would cross the electric fencing that surrounded District twelve and enter the woods where he would teach her about nature and how to properly hunt. After her father was killed in a mining explosion, Katniss had a never ending hatred for her mother. Her mother fell into a deep depression after her husband had died, leaving Katniss responsible for taking care of her sister, Primrose. She did everything she could to protect Prim, but nothing could protect her from the day of the Reaping.
The Reaping is a day where one girl and one boy, between the ages of twelve and eighteen, are chosen as tribute to participate in the annual Hunger Games. Here, the tributes must fight to their death until only one tribute remains alive. The Capitol, a system like today's government, holds the annual Hunger Games as a way to punish the Districts for a rebellion that started in District thirteen, which is no longer part of Panem. In the novel, the children of each district face the reaping for the 74th Hunger Games. Just as Katniss thought that Prim would be safe, Prim is called to be the female tribute for District twelve.

Katniss volunteers as tribute to further shy her sister away from the bloodshed that would happen throughout the course of the games. Along with Katniss volunteering for tribute, the male tribute chosen for District twelve is Peeta Mellark. Together they train with the help of their mentor, Haymitch. Katniss also receives help from her stylist, Cinna, who dresses her in styles that assist in Katniss's fame, dubbing her as "The Girl Who is On Fire."
As Katniss and Peeta enter the games, they form a "fake" love affair in order to attract the Capitol and the sponsor's attention. The sponsors they received helped them heal from their injuries and their illnesses they encountered throughout the games. They also managed to trick the Capitol in allowing both of them to win the annual Hunger Games, which has never been allowed before. Although the citizens of the Capitol and the members of each District seem to be fooled by their act, President Snow can see between the lines and knows their relationship is not genuine, thus leading to the next novel, Catching Fire.
