The Hunger Game How-Tos
MAKEUP
Throughout the novel and the film, Katniss comes off as more of a tomboy than a fashionable and stylish young woman. She lives in one of the poorest districts in Panem, meaning that there is no resources available for her to wear makeup. When Katniss is first introduced, she displays her look for The Reaping. She is wearing no makeup, sporting a fresh face. Collins wanted to emphasize her nude and natural look in order for the readers and viewers to see that Katniss came from poor conditions. The first experience she has with makeup is during the tribute parade at the Capitol. Even though she is wearing makeup, it is still very minimal with only eye makeup and lip gloss. Cinna creates a natural look for Katniss to illustrate that she is pure and allows her outfit to make a bolder statement for her, creating "The Girl Who is On Fire." After Katniss reaches the Capitol, she wears makeup almost everyday because cameras are always on her. In her interview before the games, she is seen wearing more makeup than usual. She has a dramatic elegant look that accentuates her maturity and makes her look desirable. Cinna made her look desirable on purpose because he wanted the citizens of the Capitol and possible sponsors to make their final judgement about her before the games. In one of Katniss's last looks during her victory interview, she sports a completely different makeup style that resembles more of the Capitol's style. Cinna gives her butterfly wings in the corner of her eyes to emphasize her happiness. It also goes against the traditional makeup style of the other tributes. Her face has some makeup, consisting of only eye makeup, blush, and bronzer. This makeup style and the yellow color of her dress represent joy and friendship. Cinna She had won the games, had fallen in "love", and wanted all of Panem to know it.
HAIR
The Katniss braid has become a popular braid amongst most young female adults. It is a twist on the normal French braid and is very flirty and sporty, but could also serve as an elegant up-do. Katniss is most commonly seen wearing this side braid during the games. It is the perfect way to keep her hair out of her face while fighting for her life. Throughout the novel and the film, Katniss is constantly running, jumping, climbing, and fighting. She walks through large amounts of mug, dirt, and water; thus needing a type of hairstyle that is low maintenance. Another scene where she is seen wearing braids is during the tribute parade. It compliments her sleek style and allows the flames around her head to spark more importance than her hairstyle. The braid is very simple compared to the Capitols citizen's hairstyles. Most of the Capitols citizens are seen wearing huge wigs that are different colors. They also wear different head pieces and clips that emphasize their look. To the Capitol's citizens, hair is an accessory.
NAILS
As mentioned, the citizens of the Capitol accessorized any part of their body possible. Although Katniss is not seen wearing nail polish throughout the film, it is almost certain that the citizens of the Capitol wore nail art. The flames represent Katniss and how she was named "The Girl That Was On Fire." The second set of nails represents District twelve and Katniss. There is a picture of Katniss's bow and arrow, her Mockingjay pin, and a flame to represent her spirit and temperament.
