Dress shabbily and they remember the dress, dress impeccably and they remember the woman. - Coco Chanel
Rogue Magazine’s goal is to illustrate that going rogue means “operating outside normal or desirable controls.” It is designed to express different fashion styles and inform its readers about the current new trends that emerge, gifting each reader the confidence to break the current norms of fashion and be creative with their style. Throughout The Hunger Games, Cinna, Katniss's stylist, dresses her in styles that makes her stand out and illustrate that she is powerful, extremely desirable, and will not succumb to the Capital’s power. This follows Rogue's main mission by inspiring young female adults to make a statement with their clothing and rebel against the typical normal fashion.
In The Hunger Games, Cinna styled Katniss in a way that rebelled against the normal and traditional fashion of the post-apacolyptic world. He created a strange, risky look that gave Katniss edge, personality, and attitude. Her styles reflect simple looks, sporty looks, fierce looks, and elegant looks. Similarly, young female adults today strive to express their individuality through their fashion.
Katniss's first outfit depicts a simple school girl look. She wear minimal makeup and her hair is loosely tied back in a braided bun. If you have read the novel, you would know that the dress she is wearing is a hand-me-down from her mother. This aspect emphasizes the poor conditions that Katniss and her family are forced to live in. The first important characteristic of her dress is that it is simple. There are no ruffles or designs, just some buttons and a sash that ties around her waist. Simplicity represents Katniss's state of poverty; since it was a hand-me-down from her mother, it illustrates how her mother had also been poor all her life. The second important characteristic of her dress is the color. When writing the novel and creating the film, Collins wanted to highlight Katniss's poor conditions buy making her dress a pale light-blue color. Blue typically represents sorrow, which is well suited for her Reaping outfit. Sorrow is seen at the Reaping when Katniss volunteers as tribute in order to protect her sister, Prim. Collins also puts Katniss in a simple light-blue dress to make her look innocent. She wanted the Capitol and the members of the other districts to see that Katniss was a typical citizen and that she wouldn't stand a chance against the tributes that had been preparing for the games their whole lives. Although she came off as non-threatening, the Capitol later found out that they were in for a great surprise.
In the novel, the first time we see Katniss take a turn with her fashion is when Cinna styles her for the tribute parade. Cinna personally chose Katniss to be the tribute that he works with because he could tell from her brave and stern personality that she would be different from the other tributes. Katniss utilizes Cinna's help to reflect how she is not afraid to rebel against the traditional representation of District twelve and past tributes. District twelve is known for their coal mining, so by dressing in flames instead of rubbing dirt on her face and wearing a mining outfit, she is able to stand out and make and everlasting impression on the citizens of Panem. Cinna knows that Katniss does not like the grip of the Capitol, so he purposely dresses her in outfits that make her look appealing and desirable. Her rebellious attitude and Cinna's styling expertise assist in Katniss being dubbed as "the girl on fire," thus foreshadowing her actions and events that would later occur in the games.
Throughout the course of the novel, Katniss is most commonly seen wearing her sporty outfit for the games. If you look closely, you can see that attached to her jacket is a pin shaped like a mocking jay holding an arrow in its mouth. Before leaving for the games, Madge came to say goodbye and asked her to wear the mocking jay pin to represent District twelve. This pin symbolizes defiance and fuels Katniss's hatred for the Capitol. Every time she looks at the pin, it reminds her of Rue and how the Capitol allowed her to die. This is the main influence she has in rebelling against the Capitol. The mocking jay pin also symbolizes Katniss's eagerness to make a change and defy the traditional norms of the games. It gives her courage to keep fighting and allows her to follow through with her promises. At the end of the games, Katniss achieved defying the norms of the games by forcing the Capitol to allow two winners from the same district. She was either going to make them claim two winners, or she wasn't going to give them a winner at all.
An interview can either make or break an important individual, and with Cinna's help, Katniss was able to leave an outstanding impression on possible sponsors. Her flaming mermaid style gown is exquisite and flattering to her physique. The flames that ignite when she twirls symbolize Katniss's personality. She is fierce and the flames represent her strength and temperament. In the novel, Haymitch mentions how the Capitol and sponsors must of liked her "heat". This refers to her attitude, rather than the actual flames coming from her outfits. The red color of the dress also highlights her strong feeling of hatred for the Capitol. The gown being one-shouldered plays a part in making her look mature and enticing. It allows for her bare neck and shoulder to show, thus charming the viewers. Not only does the dress displays her courage, but the jewels on her shoulder and the soft aspects of the ruffles contribute in making her look desirable.
The next time you decide what to wear, think about your style. Do you follow the traditional pattern? Or do you rebel against the norms and make a statement? Find your inner Katniss and play with your look. Whether it is adding a colorful scarf or painting your nails a brighter color than usual, be rebellious.
